An interview with Edwin Kamerman
The Ministry of Defense is facing the largest growth mission in decades: an expansion from 70,000 to 200,000 professionals. This affects not only the Ministry itself, but the entire defense industry and every company connected to it. The demand for personnel is rising rapidly and Defense cannot meet this challenge alone. Talentmark Defense responds to this need by building an ecosystem that supports organizations in finding, preparing and connecting technical talent. In this interview, Edwin, Business Director at Talentmark Defense, explains how and why this step was taken.
The reason for establishing Talentmark Defense is clear: the personnel shortage within Defense is exceptionally large and organizations in this sector need partners who can help build sustainable solutions.
It’s interesting to support this sector, but at the same time you’re also giving something back to society.
Talentmark has long observed that practically trained technical talent is scarce across multiple industries and the Defense sector is no exception. In addition, more and more professionals are seeking roles with societal impact, people who want to contribute to their country and are looking for meaningful work. This closely aligns with what Edwin and the recruitment teams hear from candidates every day.
Candidates we already work with enjoy contributing to society. They really want to do something meaningful for the Netherlands.
The creation of a Defense division was therefore a logical step. In this field, Talentmark can use its recruitment expertise to make a significant contribution to expanding the available workforce. Defense cannot solve this challenge alone. It requires partners who can help organize new talent pipelines and prepare professionals from other industries for Defense-related environments.
The largest shortages within the defense and security domain are found in technical roles across the entire spectrum. From operational technical positions to maintenance, repair, construction and other hands-on operational functions. The pace of technological innovation in this sector is extremely fast, which accelerates the demand for skilled personnel even further.
What is produced today is outdated tomorrow.
The continuous level of innovation means there is a structural need for both technically skills workers and specialists who can adapt to evolving technologies. As a result, the demand for technical talent remains consistently high.
Talentmark Defense stands out by building an ecosystem that connects talent with defense-related organizations. Talentmark has a large, diverse and technically strong talent pool of professionals who currently work outside of the defense industry, yet whose knowledge and experience align exceptionally well with roles within this sector. Edwin highlights this unique strength:
We have an enormous database of candidates who could work in technical roles from another sector, many of whom are available right now.
By facilitating these connections between talent and organizations, Talentmark Defense creates a sustainable network that benefits the entire sector.
Quality and safety are essential within the defense and security sector. That is why Talentmark Defense uses extensive screening procedures, reviewing education, skills, background and overall suitability for the type of work required within defense. Where necessary, additional training or upskilling is provided to ensure professionals are fully prepared. Edwin explains:
We ensure the quality of candidates by pre-screening based on education and training.
This approach ensures candidates are thoroughly prepared and meet the strict quality and safety standards required within the sector.
In the coming years, Talentmark Defense aims to develop into a stable and strategic partner for Defense and companies across the value chain. The focus lies on sustainable workforce development, growing the ecosystem and strengthening collaboration between organizations. Edwin summarizes this ambition clearly:
Becoming a strong supplier for Defense and for Defense suppliers.
By growing in step with the sector, Talentmark Defense can contribute to the long-term capacity of the Dutch defense infrastructure.
