What do you do in Engineering?

Engineering at Defense is all about designing, analyzing and improving complex weapon systems and equipment. You ensure that systems are reliable, safe and future-proof enabling the armed forces to always rely on operational readiness.

As an Engineer, you work with lifecycle analyses, maintenance concepts and technical designs. You study how systems function, assess where improvements are needed and translate findings into practical solutions. In practice, you work on:

  • Conducting RAM analyses (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability);
  • Developing maintenance concepts and sustainment strategies;
  • Performing configuration management and quality control;
  • Carrying out technical evaluations and testing programs;
  • Providing advice on modifications and new equipment projects;
  • Supporting the introduction and decommissioning of systems.

In short, as an Engineer you combine technical expertise with strategic insight ensuring Defense can continue to rely on modern, reliable systems.

Engineering

  • Engineer Level 1 – Supports the sustainment of (weapon) systems by conducting technical analyses, adjusting maintenance concepts and providing recommendations to improve processes and materials;
  • Engineer Level 2 – Performs in-depth technical analyses, evaluates maintenance concepts and coordinates projects. Advises on sustainment and replacement of systems and reviews proposals for modifications or upgrades;
  • Engineer Level 3 – Leads and oversees complex technical projects. Analyzes maintenance performance, translates regulations into guidelines and advises on strategic decisions for sustainment and modernization.

Career opportunities within Engineering

Many professionals start as Engineer Level 1, contributing to analyses and technical documentation. With experience, you can progress to Engineer Level 2, managing your own projects and taking on greater responsibility.

From there, you can advance to Engineer Level 3, where you take on a coordinating and advisory role becoming a key player in development and sustainment of Defense systems.
