What tasks and responsibilities can you expect as a Product Manager?

In a hybrid function (mainly office), the PM is responsible for the implementation of the product strategy, the marketing plan and all related marketing and sales activities. These may involve a medicine, group of medicines, medical nutrition (or a FMCG), OTC/healthcare products and medical devices. Often the PM is involved with pricing, nationally or in collaboration with sales and account management. The element of financial activity extends to budgets, sales results and analysis. In summary, the main roles and responsibilities are:

  • writing and executing strategic business and marketing plans, in collaboration with important prescribers, opinion leaders, round tables and other advisory groups;
  • joint financial responsibility for budgets (advertising and promotion, conferences and symposia, sales brochures and other product documentation, website content, literature), as well as analysis of budget income and costs;
  • initiating and coordinating marketing activities and projects;
  • presenting to, and training the field staff;
  • visiting national and international congresses, and hospitals and key opinion leaders (KOLs);
  • translating the corporate brand strategy in close collaboration with headquarters, together with logos and visuals, working with corporate product budgets (approval for expenditure on projects, local communication strategies) and providing input into corporate product strategy;
  • being a discussion partner for first, second and third-line professionals such as general practitioners, medical specialists, pharmacists and other medical professionals, and for other DMU members (decision-making units) such as local and national formulary committees and insurance companies;
  • organising advisory councils, acting as a discussion leader or chairman, or giving product presentations.

What education and skills do you need as a Product Manager?

A Product Manager should have a completed and relevant bachelor or master’s education as a starting point. This may be in, for example, marketing, commercial economics or biomedical sciences. Experience in marketing or sales is highly recommended. Of course, you may be looking for advancement from a Junior Product Manager pharmaceutical role, so you have already had some experience of the marketing and sales side.

Skills required for a Product Manager include:

  • creativity and persuasiveness;
  • analytical and conceptual strength;
  • a strong and inspiring personality;

What salary can you expect as a Product Manager?

Terms of employment are variable according to the specific requirements of the job, and depend on experience. The salary of a PM in the Netherlands usually ranges between €50.000 and €80.000 per year; less for a Junior Product Manager in a pharmaceutical company. There may also be benefits such as a lease car, telephone, laptop or a bonus scheme.
