What does a Process Engineer do?

Process engineers ensure that the manufacture of products or the delivery services is done in the most efficient way, and conforms to the appropriate quality standards. As a Process Engineer in pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing, this can also include chemical or biochemical processes. The role involves machinery and equipment, directly or indirectly part of the manufacturing process, and includes vital aspects such as compliance with protocols and relevant regulations, risk assessments, optimising performance and testing machinery and equipment. It may also extend to design and development for a more efficient process.

What role and responsibilities can you expect as a Process Engineer?

In general, as a Process Engineer you have strategic oversight and design input to processes in manufacturing, and design or regularly test and monitor equipment. Depending on the organisation, other responsibilities might include:

• Conducting research into the design and development of new equipment;
• Developing, configuring and optimising manufacturing processes, including managing cost and time constraints;
• Ensuring that internal and external protocols and regulations are being met;
• Running risk assessments of equipment and processes;
• Collecting data, writing reports and presenting findings to senior management.

What education and skills do you need as a Process Engineer?

As a starting point, you will need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, together with excellent mathematical ability and analytical skills. Proficiency in process engineering software systems and IT in general is also a must for this role, plus sector-specific knowledge in the relevant health and safety regulations. You will also need the following personal attributes:

• Strong written and verbal communication skills including effective listening, and the ability to convince others to change practices and procedures when required;
• A proven ability to identify, assess and solve problems with excellent attention to detail;
• Accurate work but flexible when necessary, and able to work equally well within a team or as an individual;
• A result-oriented attitude and an ability to meet deadlines and handle stress well.

What salary can you expect as a Process Engineer?

The salary for a Process Engineer will depend on a number of factors such as the type and size of organisation, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, you can expect a salary of between €38.900,- and €71.300,- per annum in the Netherlands.
