What does a Mechanical Operator do?

As a Mechanical Operator within Operations & Maintencance you ensure that the machinery and installations in a production line are all working properly, and with maximum efficiency. It is essential to the organisation that the production process is kept running and the expected high quality of the final products is maintained. As the production line is usually automated, your work is mainly monitoring and checking the mechanical aspects of the machinery and equipment. Anything not working correctly may mean that you need you to identify the issue, make adjustments and help other members of the team with repairs or replacement parts when necessary.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Mechanical Operator?

Your overall roles and responsibilities as a Mechanical Operator involve the operation of mechanical devices, machines and installations within the production process. Depending on the size of the facility this could mean covering several types of machinery, sometimes at the same time. You are part of a team of operators under a Production Manager (or equivalent job title). Typical tasks include:

• Checking the progress of automated systems;
• Making timely adjustments where necessary;
• Helping the engineering team with repairs and replacements.

What education and skills do you need as a Mechanical Operator?

Apart from holding a MBO or MTS diploma, you will need specific and relevant training and qualifications such as the following:

• MBO training: Vapro A, B, or C Mechanical Operator;
• VCA Basic Mechanical;
• VCA-VOL (safety);
• GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)

Personal attributes are also important: in particular, to be customer-oriented, show initiative and have a scrupulous and thoughtful outlook towards the work. You will be expected to work well as part of a team including consideration for their safety, and be comfortable with shift work.

What salary can you expect as a Mechanical Operator?

The salary for a Mechanical Operator will depend on a number of factors such as the type and size of the production facility, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, in the Netherlands you can expect a salary of between €2.500,- and €3.500,- per month plus shift allowance.
