What do you do in Asset Management?

Asset Management is the field in which you are responsible for the entire lifecycle of Defense equipment. From the acquisition of a new weapon system to the moment it is decommissioned. You ensure that throughout its lifespan, everything remains reliable, safe and cost-efficient.

This goes beyond maintenance alone; it also includes inventory control, spare parts management and supply chain processes. You look ahead. Which spare parts are needed? When should maintenance take place? What resources are required? By making these decisions wisely, you ensure that the armed forces can always rely on equipment that is ready for operation. In practice, you work on:

  • Developing and adjusting lifecycle and maintenance strategies;
  • Determining stock levels, spare parts and spare part management strategies;
  • Forecasting and demand/supply planning for equipment and components;
  • Coordinating suppliers, technical teams and operational units;
  • Monitoring costs, availability and reliability throughout the entire lifecycle.

In short, in Asset Management you ensure that weapon systems, vehicles, ships and aircraft remain safely deployable throughout their lifespan.

Asset Management

  • Asset Manager Level 1 – Contributes to the logistics processes around (weapon) systems. Conducts analyses, develops plans and provides recommendations to improve inventory, supply reliability and operational availability;
  • Asset Manager Level 2 – Manages logistics processes and monitors lead times for orders and repairs. Handles demand and inventory management and proposes improvements to increase availability;
  • Asset Manager Level 3 – Coordinates and oversees complex logistics processes. Maintains oversight of supply reliability, international suppliers and contracts, translating data into supply chain improvements;
  • Project Lead Asset Management – Leads projects related to the maintenance and sustainment of (weapon) systems throughout their lifecycle. Develops maintenance strategies, coordinates working groups and ensures operational readiness is maintained.

Career opportunities within Asset Management

Many professionals start as Asset Manager Level 1, contributing to forecasting and spare parts management. After a few years, you can advance to a senior or coordinating role, where you take responsibility for supply chain logistics and lifecycle costing.

With more experience, you can grow into a Project Lead Asset Management position, taking both technical and organizational leadership over the sustainment of Defense equipment
