As a medical affairs professional you have the opportunity to work in a number of therapeutic areas, according to your background and experience. This might be helping the commercial department of a pharma company with its communication about research; the use of new and existing medicines; training; or meeting the requirements for admission to the market. Or, you could be contributing to studies into the effectiveness and safety of new medicines. You are the bridge between the commercial aspects of a pharma or biotech company and their scientific staff, especially those in research, so that everyone properly understands the issues under consideration. Your expertise helps the company move from the research stage to the commercial side of medicines so you need to be able to communicate effectively across different disciplines and functions.
Your job in medical affairs will vary as you might be specialising in a particular subfield, and in one of several types of organisation. For example, you might be working as a Medical Manager or Medical Advisor in the medical department of a biotech or pharmaceutical company. Or you might be working externally as a Medical Science / Scientific Liaison Officer. You could even be leading a medical affairs team – for example, as a Manager Medical Affairs, Medical or Associate Medical Director, or Head of Medical Affairs, depending on your background and skills There are many possibilities.
