Integrated Logistics Support (ILS)

What do you do in ILS?

Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) is the field in which you organize all logistics and maintenance processes required to keep weapon systems operational. You make sure aircraft keep flying, vehicles keep moving and ships stay mission-ready. Without ILS, the armed forces simply couldn’t function.

Within ILS, you bring together technology, logistics and project management. You oversee the entire lifecycle of a system from the acquisition of a new vehicle to its decommissioning. The main goal: ensuring that equipment such as helicopters, ships and vehicles remains operational at all times. In practice, you work on:

  • Developing maintenance concepts and plans aligned with operational requirements;
  • Defining spare parts, tools and training needed for maintenance;
  • Analyzing supplier proposals and ensuring compliance with military standards;
  • Managing data in SAP and ensuring data quality;
  • Supporting the introduction of new equipment and testing of systems;
  • Creating ILS packages for sustainment programs.

In short, you make sure everything behind the scenes is in order so the armed forces can operate safely and effectively.

Integrated Logistics Support

  • ILS Specialist – Contributes to equipment projects by developing maintenance strategies, evaluating supplier proposals and organizing logistics elements such as spare parts, documentation and training;
  • Senior ILS Specialist – Advises project teams on system logistics. Conducts studies, draft requirements programs and assesses market and supplier proposals to ensure logistical feasibility;
  • Project Lead Asset Management – Coordinates all activities related to the maintenance and sustainment of (weapon) systems throughout their lifecycle. Defines maintenance strategies, develops plans and ensures operational readiness is maintained.

Career opportunities within ILS

Many professionals start as an ILS Specialist, working on maintenance plans and SAP data management. With experience, you can grow into a Senior ILS Specialist role, taking on more responsibility for coordination and stakeholder alignment.

With further experience, you can advance to a Project Lead Asset Management position where you take the lead on sustainment projects and influence maintenance strategies across Defense.
