What does a Product Specialist do?

A Product Specialist within Sales in the Life Sciences field means you are responsibility for the sales results and market share development for products being promoted in your region. Usually, you will have sales and account plan targets to hit among the most important members of DMUs (Decision Making Units) in your region including GP’s, pharmacists and other medical specialists. You like a challenge and dealing with people. Establishing and maintaining your own network is essential so you can access the right people, and of course your proactive approach, organisation and communication skills must be excellent. Reporting to a (Regional) Sales Manager, your role may also be called a Account Manager or Territory Manager.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Product Specialist?

As a Product Specialist in pharma you work with a wide range of Healthcare Professionals to inform them about products you are introducing to them. This can be the medical/scientific benefits including effectiveness and safety, but also price/quality ratios and other features. Of course, you will be comparing these against similar products on the market to demonstrate their advantage. Market share development and customer satisfaction are key, so you may also be setting up projects in medical, marketing and sales to help drive this.

A Product Specialist’s role needs a motivated person who can also meet organizational and communication challenges as well as meeting the commercial objectives, such as:

  • Building up a professional network;
  • Actively collaborating with colleagues within the company;
  • Organizing meetings and visiting the target group based on the plan;
  • Preparing, giving and following up group presentations;
  • Representing your organization at symposia and congresses;
  • Maintaining activity details on a CRM system.

What education and skills do you need as a Product Specialist?

You will need to hold a completed HBO /WO (bachelor’s) education for example in biomedical, marketing or commercial economics. In general you will need the following competences:

  • An interest in the Life Sciences industry and market developments, preferably with experience as a Key Account Manager or Sales Representative;
  • A good command of Dutch and English, and an effective negotiator;
  • A driven personality and a dynamic team player with a customer-oriented attitude, including strong networking abilities;
  • A self-starter with project management skills and able to monitor deadlines;
  • Be resident in the region where you will be working, if applicable;
  • Sometimes it can be of added value if you already have a warm network of HCP’s;
  • During onboarding you will gain insides in your insides in your and competitor products, law, regulations and general pharmaceutical knowledge (AMK = in Dutch).

What salary can you expect as a Product Specialist?

Terms of employment vary greatly depending on experience and the size of the organization. There is often a bonus scheme, and you may find that a car, mobile phone and laptop are included. The starting salary of a Product Specialist in the Netherlands is between €40.000,- and €80.000,- per year.
