What does a Mechanical Technician do?

In your position as a Mechanical Technician within Operations & Maintenance, you ensure that the production line machinery has fewer breakdowns, stoppages and defects to keep the process running smoothly and continuously to avoid loss of productivity. This is achieved by planned maintenance and troubleshooting on a daily basis, and by working on optimisation projects in the facility as required. Correct plant maintenance also ensures the safety of those working on the production line. This is done in line with total productive maintenance (TPM) principles, incorporating 5S in LEAN manufacturing. Depending on the products being manufactured, you may also apply the safety standard in explosive environment, ATEX.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a Mechanical Technician?

In general, your role as a Mechanical Technician involves carrying out periodic inspections on machinery and installations so any issues with the mechanical condition are recognised in time for corrective actions can be taken. Should any malfunctions arise, you analyse and solve the problem, so the production line downtime is kept to a minimum.

Other typical tasks may include:

  • Planning work distribution and work order in collaboration with your colleagues and other departments;
  • Keeping the workshop and repair environment clean;
  • Guiding service technicians from third parties, in line with the relevant regulations via safe work permits;
  • Processing report(s) of work orders via SAP Plant Maintenance.

What education and skills do you need as a Mechanical Technician?

You will need to demonstrate completion of specific and relevant qualifications and training such as the following:

  • MTS WTB (mechanical engineering);
  • MBO training: VAPRO C mechanical;
  • VCA-VOL (safety);
  • GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices);
  • Completion of relevant ROVC training courses, including TPM principles, and 5S in LEAN manufacturing.

Certain personal attributes are also important: in particular, to be customer-oriented, show initiative and have a scrupulous and thoughtful outlook towards the work. You will be expected to work well as part of a team including consideration for their safety, and be comfortable with shift work.

What salary can you expect as a Mechanical Technician?

The salary for a Mechanical Technician will depend on a number of factors such as the type and size of the facility, your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role on offer. As a guide, in the Netherlands you can expect a salary of between €3.000,- and €5.000,- per month plus shift allowance.
